Cori walked down the long path that wound through the forest, moving deeper into this strange land. It was so weird, had started out so normal. She had just been walking along, taking a break from writing her history paper that was due tomorrow, and found a deep tunnel. Why did she have to be so curious?
This place was strange beyond all reason and that just provoked her further along. "Who knows how things go here? I have to say, this could actually be...fun!" She grinned and stopped at a large tree covered in signs pointing in all different directions. "Which way to go...?"
"That depends, which way do you want to go?" Cori jumped at the voice and turned, looking for the source.
"W-well, I don't really know-"
"Then the path does not matter." She saw, right before her eyes, a man appear, sitting in the tree. He wore a long grey robe with a hood that covered his eyes. Only his mouth was visable and it was stretched wide in a grin, a malicious grin that made Cori nervous. "I would suggest going to see the Mad Hatter."
"Uh...I, think I will. Thank you, Mr....?"
"Cheshire Cat. That is what you may call me, dear." He let out a laugh as his body disappeared. "But be careful. After all, the Hatter is Mad." The laugh continued as all but his mouth disappeared.

"Did no one bloody see that? Did you understand a word he said?" Droiture shrieked, pointing at the place where his body used to be. "This place is absolutely insane!" Droiture's mouth twitched into a grin as malicious as the cat's. "This is my kind of place." He muttered.

Cori shifted uneasily, staring down the path that would lead her to the Mad Hatter. "Why do I have a horrible feeling about this? I guess because I have horrible feelings about everything in places that I probably shouldn't be in." She sighed heavily and moved down the path. "I wish I had paid more attention when my mother used to read me this story."

"I've read it myself. Basically, look out for something. Hatter'll ask you a riddle about ravens and writing desks. Don't repeat the riddle he asks you right away, because he'll go nuts and forget he asked you. He'll think you're the mad one." Droiture said. He grinned at Cori. "Mum never liked me reading the story. Called it sinful. But you see, that's exactly why I read it so many times."

"Yeah, always do what your parents tell you not to. Makes sense I guess. That's how I ended up down here, anyways." Cori looked around, realizing how much it was to take in all at once. "This place...is so messed up. Not in really a bad way just...in a 'OMG WTF?' kind of way."

"Like whoever wrote the story was hitting the opium pipe a bit too hard before telling a tall tale to a room full of little girls?" Droiture smirked, pulling off a petal to a rosebush and wiping it between his fingers, showing the red rose petal to have been painted that color; it's original color was white. "Someone doesn't like the color white around here, and a sinking feeling in my stomach says I know just who it is."

Cori nodded in agreement. "I am not at all excited about finding out either. All I can hope is that it is like the book and doesn't follow anything else..." Her thoughts wandered until they came to a small wooden gate. There was a large table set out covered in teapots and cups. "This must be the place..."

Suddenly a man came from the woods. "Ah, I see you've come upon my table. Come and have a cup." The man was wearing a large hat that stretched up high.

Cori jumped and stared at the man. "I guess I can understand the Mad Hatter reference. Um, thank you." She sat at the table, looking at the things placed here and there.

Suddenly a small, balled-up hedgehog hit Droiture in the back of the head. He began swearing profusely, and kicked the small animal back towards whence it came. "Watch where you're tossing those damn things!" He called. A female voice cried out in shock, obviously as the animal hit her in the head. "Who dares strike the Queen! Off with their heads!" She called out.
"Fuck."

"The Queen! The Queen! She's hot under the collar now! Time to move tea time to somewhere else!" The Mad Hatter jumped up from his seat at the table.
"It's rude of her to come by when not invited!" The March Hare jumped up as well, grabbing a small teapot that held the sleeping Dormouse.
"Oh, great! This was what we needed! We just got here and now we're going to lose our heads." Cori groaned.

"Like I knew! Damn, blame me for everything, why don't you?" Droiture cried, diving underneath the table. He shivered under there. He'd read the story and knew that no matter how powerful he was, the Queen had the upper hand. This was her kingdom, and Droiture not only had no place there, but didn't know the extent of his abilities here in this Wonderland. He would be useless going up against an irate Red Queen.

"Relax. Just let me take care of things." Cori jumped up and stood blocking Droiture from view while he hid under the table. She watched the Queen of Hearts come through the small white gate, furious. "Excuse me, your majesty. I did not realize that was your hedgehog. I thought it belonged to that of some near by delinquent."
"You confused me for a commoner!? And a bad one at that! Unforgivable! Off with her-"
"What I mean, your majesty, is that I would like to formally apologize for my obvious mistake."

Droiture tugged on Cori's leg. "Hurry it up, she's getting too close!" Droiture whispered frantically, trying to create something crystal to protect himself with and found he could not. Either his emotions were out of whack or this place really wasn't "his kind of place" after all.

"Maybe there would be some way to settle this then? Anything to make up for my ignorance, your majesty." Cori curtsied slightly, giving Droiture a 'I'm doing the best I can' look.
"Hmm, well, since you are truly sorry for your error, maybe we could work this out with a game of croquet." The Queen gave a smile as if there was no way to win this battle.
"Of course!" Cori answered, looking for a distraction from where this may ultimately lead.
